ABCollege’s school papers reap awards; qualify for nat’l press confab

The Grade School Department’s “Alphabet Soup” bested some two hundred elementary school papers in the region as it won ‘Best in Feature Page’ and ‘Best in Sports Page. The award was given during the Regional Schools Press Conference held last December at Sindangan, this province.

Alphabet Soup is the official English publication of ABC-elementary department. According to Mrs. Ma. Marlie M. Cadavedo, the adviser, this is the second time that the publication reaped a regional citation. Last year, the publication was also recognized for being ‘Best in Feature Page’ and for being the ‘Highest Pointer’ in the bracket A category.

The adviser said that being recognized in the region is an honor not only for the young publication but also for the College as a whole . “Many school papers have been sent as entries for the regional group contest for years now, but Alphabet Soup despite its two years of existence bested them all,” Cadavedo proudly narrated.  “This is now twice in a row that it is being declared best [in a publication’s page] for the whole region,” she continued.

By winning in the regional conference, the Alphabet Soup becomes a regional entry for the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) which is slated this February. Last year, the paper also qualified for the NSPC which was held at Naga City.

On the other hand, the school paper “Barkada Abakada”, the official Filipino publication of the same department, also qualified for the NSPC along with the “Blue Quill” of the High School department. Mrs. Anggie Pacatang-Bation is the adviser of the high school publication.

Cadavedo said that because of Alphabet Soup, Nahreelou B. Agura, who won first in the region for editorial cartooning, was nominated last year as one of the most outstanding elementary journalists for Zamboanga Peninsula.

“The recognition we have received inspires us, including the publication’s consultant to do even better for the journalism competitions yet to come,” the adviser concluded. (by padm)
