ABCollege gears up for Physics Confab, DOST Secretary to grace event

The Andres Bonifacio College is gearing up for the 13th Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM) National Physics Conference which will be hosted by the College on October 20-22, 2011 at the Graduate and Professional Schools (GPS) Building. Department of Science and Technology Secretary Mario G. Montejo will grace the event as  the keynote speaker during the opening ceremonies at the College Auditorium.

This year’s conference will showcase researches and advances in specialized  fields of Physics like Photonics, Materials Science, Theoretical Physics, High-Energy Physics, and Pedagogy in Physics Teaching. The SPVM, which is based at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City, has invited five (5)  renowned foreign and local Physics researchers and educators, namely: Dr. Mohd Zamani Zulkifli and Prof. Sulaiman Wadi Harun of the Photonics Research Center of the University of Malaya, Malaysia, Prof. Ivan B. Culaba of the Physics Department of the Ateneo de Manila University, Prof. Joan Cordovilla of Bicol University, and Dr. Maricor N. Soriano of the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines.

Secretary Montejo, who is an engineer by profession, was appointed by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III when the latter assumed office. He oversees one the most well-funded departments in the government which is tasked to promote and to develop science and technology in the country. Under Montejo’s hood are key agencies such as the PHIVOLCS and PAG-ASA.

It can be remembered that the ABCollege has been chosen by the SPVM to host the conference because of its stature in the academic community as one of the distinguished schools in the country and its capability to host national events. Teachers and students from various schools, colleges, and universities from all over the country will troop to Andres Bonifacio College to be part of the prestigious scientific gathering. To date, the 13th SPVM National Physics Conference is the grandest of its kind ever to be held in the province.

The College Auditorium, which is located at the 4th Floor of the GPS Building, will be the main venue of the conference. Being  the ABCollege’s newest state-of-the-art facility equipped with modern multimedia equipment, all plenary sessions and other major activities will be held in the said facility. It can accommodate a maximum of 400 persons. Moreover, 44 paper presentations will be held at the 2nd floor of the GPS Building and the poster presentations will be at the ground floor lobby of the same building.

The 13th SPVM National Physics Conference serves as an avenue for enhanced collaboration among physics educators, researchers, and students. It is also an opportunity for scientists to address the present problems of the nation and to provide scientific solutions to these problems. It is hoped that student participants can derive the most out of the conference and that the activity can inspire them to become researchers thereby  contributing to the upliftment of the society.
