Hontiveros to address ABCollege’s graduates

Akbayan Party-list representative and Nobel Peace prize nominee Ana Theresia “Risa” Hontiveros will address some four hundred graduates of Andres Bonifacio College during the 64th Commencement Exercises at the College Green, this Thursday, March 18. She will speak on the theme “Transformational Leadership for Good Governance and Sustainable Development”.

Author of more than 80 bills and resolutions on various concerns, Hontiveros  has been known as an opposition leader, progressive lawmaker, former journalist and peace advocate. Her activism began when she was still in high school at the Saint Scholastica’s College. She became a scholar and a student leader at the Ateneo de Manila University, where she graduated cum laude for her Bachelor’s degree in Social Science.

While still in school, Hontiveros entered the world of journalism, a career she pursued for more than a decade. She was awarded the Golden Dove for Best Female Newscaster by the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) in 1994.

She also became active in the peace movement and served  as the Secretary General of the Coalition for the Peace and member of the GRP panel in the peace talks with the  National Democratic Front. She was subsequently nominated for the prestigious Nobel Prize for Peace.

Hontiveros was also given the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Award for Peace Advocacy in 2001. She made her mark in the national politics when the police illegally arrested her at the height of the ‘Hello Garci’ scandal. Despite being in the minority, Hontiveros championed the enactment of several laws, among them: the Cheaper Medicines Law, CARP Extension with Reforms (CARPER), and an amendment to the Tax Code to increase income tax exemptions for minimum wage earners.

After being a member of the House of Representatives since 2004, Hontiveros is now running for Senator under the  Liberal Party slate of Senators Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas. (Mindanao Observer)
