ABCollege hosts scientific seminar, receives Physics books, equipment from SPVM

The Andres Bonifacio College recently hosted the Scientific Seminar in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology which was held last March 12, 2012 at the Arts, Graduate, and Professional Schools (AGPS)

The said seminar was spearheaded by the Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM) and the College Extension Committee of the College of Science and Mathematics, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Iligan City. Lectures in the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology were delivered by well-known researchers and professors of the said university.

For physics, Dr. Reynaldo M. Vequizo, SPVM President and chairperson of the Physics Deaprtment, talked about Identifying Key Properties of Materials using Radiation: The Case of XRD and with Electron Beam while Dr. Arnold C. Alguno talked on the topic Emerging Materials Science Trends: The MSU-IIT Experience. Prof. Rosario L. Reserva also gave a lecture-demonstration on some physics apparatus fabricated by their department which are usually used in mechanics experiments. Dr. Ruth P. Serquiña of the Department of Mathematics gave a lecture on Computer Simulation in Mathematics while Prof.Catherine R. Cano dicussed Sequential Analysis and its Applications.

Meanwhile, biologists Dr. Mark Anthony Torres and Dr. Cesar G. Demayo, chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences of MSU-IIT, talked on the Trends in Life Science Research and the Biology Graduate Programs, respectively. Dr. Evelyn C. Creencia of the Chemistry Department was supposed to talk on Value-Added Green Chemicals from Locally Available Materials but was unable to come due to some unavoidable circumstances. Dr. Vequizo delivered the lecture in her behalf.

The scientific seminar, participated in by teachers from the elementary, secondary, and tertiary levels, was organized to enhance the science and mathematics-teaching capabilities of teachers and to facilitate deeper learning among students through research. With the different graduate programs offered by MSU-IIT, particularly in the College of Science and Mathematics, the speakers also invited the participants to take up graduate studies at the said university as scholarship grants from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) are still available.

The College also received several physics books and apparatus donated by the SPVM. The donated items are expected to further strengthen the academic arsenal of the Institution in teaching physics to high school and college students. The goodwill between ABCollege and SPVM started when the former hosted the 13th SPVM National Physics Conference last October 20-22, 2011. The said event, which was held at the AGPS Building, was attended by physics educators and enthusiasts from all over the Philippines. It featured lectures from distinguished foreign and local physics researchers and educators, thus bringing physics closer to this side of the country.

SPVM is an organization of physics researchers, educators, and students based in MSU-IIT.
